Fabulous Health Fact...Signs of a Urinary Tract Infection

According to studies most women (and men) will get a urinary tract infection sometime in their life.  UTI's occur from germs infecting the system that carries out the urine in the body which is the kidneys, bladder and tubes that connect them.  This infection is not serious if treated early on but may become serious if it spreads to the kidneys causing more serious illness.

Below are some signs that may tell you that you may be suffering form a UTI.

Most Common Symptoms:
  • Pain or burning when urinating
  • Pain in the lower abdomen
  • Urge to urinate often
  • Urine that is cloudy or foul smelling
*For some symptoms may not occur*

Symptoms that the UTI may have spread to the Kidneys
  • Fever and Chills
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Pain on either side of the lower back
Things that may boost your risk for infection
  • Holding your urine
  • Kidney stones
  • Not drinking enough fluids
  • Taking frequent baths

Complications may occur if the UTI is left untreated.  If the UTI is not treated it can spread to the kidneys and cause kidney damage and for those who suffer from kidney problems it can raise risk for kidney failure.  Another complication would be the UTI entering into the bloodstream and spreading to other organs.

Remember: If detected early on a UTI can be cured with prescription antibiotics almost immediately.  Drinking lost of fluids at this time will help flush out the bacteria.  Severe infections may cause hospital care with intravenous antibiotics.
