Fabulous Health Fact...Missed or Irregular Periods!

When we miss our period or it has become irregular the first thing that comes to mind is pregnancy.  Even though pregnancy can be a factor it is not the only one.  According to studies women have between 11 and 13 menstrual cycles a year but for some women this may vary and they may have more periods or less.

Below are some determining cases that may cause you to miss or have an irregular menstrual cycle:

  • Breast Feeding- Women that breast feed will not return to menstruating until they have completed the breast feeding stage.
  • Eating Disorders
  • Excessive Weight Loss or Gain
  • Emotional Stress
  • Hormone Problems
  • Illegal Drug Use
  • Illness
  • Medicine including Birth Control which can cause lighter and shorter periods

More serious underlying causes:
  • Diabetes
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Pelvic Organ Issues
  • Premature Ovarian Failure-  This occurs when your menstrual cycle stops before age 40.  This may occur from major treatment like chemotherapy, radiation therapy and any other type of major surgery.
  • Tuberculosis
  • Liver Disease
Remember: When you begin your menstrual cycle your cycle will more then likely be irregular for a few years until the hormones reach a balance.  Even during the later years your cycle may once again become irregular when menopause is approaching. At this time you may not get your period for 12 months at a time.

Living your life with an emotional and physical balance will keep your hormones and cycle in order.  If you have any questions and concerns don't hesitate to ask your doctor.
