Back pain can be a pain in the butt for most but exercise can help to alleviate the problem. This is because exercise can help to strengten the back muscles as well as the stomach and leg muscles which help to support the spine. Although exercise is a huge factor to eliminate back pain their are some exercises that will treat the problem and those that will make it worse. Below are two seperate list on the exercises that will help and the exercises that will hinder.
Exercises that will Help
- Crunches- Help to strengthen the core muscles that support your back.
- Bird Dog- On all fours while stretching one leg out and the opposite arm you will help to strengthen and condition your back muscles.
- Hamstring Stretches- Help to strengthen back of legs which support your lower back.
- Knee to Chest- When alternating knees (on a flat surface) to chest you will help to strengthen the back legs while massaging your lower back.
- Pilates Moves- Pilates works the core muscles while stretching and strengthening the body. This in turn can help to strengthen all the key components that support your back.
- Pelvic Tilts- Help to strengthen core muscles for back support.
- Swimming- Helps to work the entire body inside and out. The water is great as it supports your body and if you are suffering form back pain just be sure to conduct moves that don't include you twisting your body.
- Wall Sits- Helps strengthen the back of your legs that helps to support your back.
Exercises that Hinder
- Leg Lifts- Lifting both legs up while lying flat on your back can actually make your back pain worse as all the pressure is aimed at your lower back. As an alternative try lifting one leg at a time while keeping the other knee bent and then alternate.
- Sit Ups- This move can actually put pressure on the disk in your spine.
- Toe Touches- Standing toe touches can also put pressure on your back especially on the disk and ligaments in your spine. This move can also overstretch the lower back muscles and hamstrings.
