This is just another pissing contest to result in a settlement and some bizarre technology sharing or nothing in particular.

    It's posturing.

this is the only comment that made sense in this entire thread.

Actually, Amazon gives you 5 gigs of space on your cloud drive for your own MP3s. When/if you buy songs from them, you get additional space for the songs you've purchased.

A lot of people have more than 5GB in their music collection, so for these people the Amazon service doesn't work.

Not sure where you guys are getting your information.

In Virginia, to posses an Armed Security Guard license, you must take a 40-hour (five-day) course.

There's a place where I live that does the training. They use M4A1 rifles and M9 pistols in the course, which are both required for certification as an armed security guard.

I can just imagine that future Apple operating systems might very well include native protection that wold continue to thwart people wanting to sell anti-malware for Apple OS.

OS X Server ships with clamav for filtering viruses through the email server. Lion merges client and server. Therefore, there will be an antivirus program shipping with 10.7.

I really hope Apple doesn't jump on the camera-phone bandwagon. Seems to go against their philosophy of having devices that do few things but to them far better. And it would make the phone useless to me. But that's just because my employers are sensitive about such devices, with the nuclear reactors and all.

And signing on with Cingular or any other major carrier seems like an even bigger mistake. The only way to truly improve the cell phone user experience is to take them out of the picture and introduce a fair and simple billing system (i.e. MVNO w/ daily flat rate, iTunes-style micropayments).

I'm amazed that no-one is seeing the very dangerous path we could be heading down here. Will people only see it when it's too late?

Are we looking into the jaws of the future where you pay, but never OWN anything? Music, Movies, Apps.

You pay to have the right to listen/watch/use the data.

The data is never downloaded to your device to do as you wish, it's always held by the owners. or distributors.

I can see this coming like a flashing red warning sign.

You never OWNED any of this stuff. You owned the physical media, and you had an unlimited license to you. The technology is just clarifying this.

If you had actually owned it, you could have copied it as much as you wanted-- legally-- and resold the copies to others. You have been capable of doing this, but it was illegal; it also was difficult to enforce the law. Now the technology is actually starting to match your legal rights. It's actually wonderful. You are not losing anything you had legally, but the true owners (the content creators and the people who support them financially) can stop getting ripped off by criminals.

I don't think the Power Mac G5 is a good example either. Are we expecting a redesign for Conroe? Not that I don't WANT Conroe in the iMac. It just seems a bit much.

Why isn't the PM G5 a good example? True, most of those were duals, but even the single 1.6 and 1.8 G5s in the first generation drew more power than Conroe, and the G5 imacs got up to 2.1 Ghz! A resdesign would be fine by me too. :)

I'm definitely no expert on this issue, but the numbers I've seen on Conroe so far don't look all that bad. Yeah, it will be hot, but not substantially, or perhaps at all, more so than the G5.

It just seems to me that if apple wants to sell the imac as a mid-range desktop, it needs to have a competitive desktop processor. The mini can use laptop components, but the imac is both bigger and more expensive; it should compete with similarly priced PC desktops.

I just do not think Apple is going to introduce a cellular phone. The ideas sound great around here, but I don't see any good busness model for such a device. What is Apple going to make money on selling such a product?

everything- thats the point. It completes the picture, as SJ has said. They make money on increasing the functionality of everything. Now that you can use an iPod to transport songs seemlessly into iTunes on other computers (authorized ones...) I'm sure that this will be something of use in the iPhone- For example- if you're out and about in the world, and someone gives you their phone number, you save it to your contacts. When you get home and plug in your phone to the computer to charge, it syncs with address book. In turn, address book syncs the phone number you were emailed this morning to your iPhone. I don't even use address book but I would under those conditions. Thing I would love to see in the phone is bluetooth connectivity. as in it could be a bluetooth handset for a phone you already have. And when your contract is up with -insert your provider- you can get service with apple. That would be be nifty.

Educated guess would be "big" iPod sales will slump whilst the Nanos & Shuffles will skyrocket. At these new lower price points that reads pretty UN-educated to me. On secopnd thought though since many of US - not the general public - are waiting for the 640x360 widescreen video iPod, this would be a miss.

I htink it's pretty lousy of Apple not to provide the firmware update to allow original 5G Video iPods to load and play Baseline H.264 640x480 self-encoded video. I'm mad about it.

Darn, was really hoping for T Mobile compatibility. Oh well, guess this was pretty expected. What about all the CDMA customers? After 6 months? Never?

Well, generally all GSM phones support the 1900mhz band, there is just the catch where European models support 900mhz, while US bound one support 850mhz (Cingular). So it's very likely the iPhone will be usuable on T-Mobile's network if unlocked. The catch is you'll have to buy it at retail price from a Cingular dealer, and get it unlocked (which Cingular might not be willing to do).

As long as the interface is not Cingular branded (like the CIngular Nokia 6030 I use on T-Mobile's network right now), and there's no branding on the phone itself, I might be willing to do that.

YES! Finally, I reap benefits from being with Cingular!!!! :D

What do you mean "finally"? Being the largest U.S. provider means you have always reaped the benefits. I cannot count the number of times I've been eagerly awaiting a certain model phone to come out and when it come here, it's always on Cingular and nobody else.

I'm hoping for iMacs because I could care less about downloading Movies. Hell the only TV I download are the free eps. Unless you can get me 5.1 surround, DVD quality for a monthly fee that is less than Netflix... well, Netflix is still king to me. :)

Apple's not doing another invite just for an Aperture update..

    MBP's

Surely they wouldn't have a whole invite just for an MBP update either? Although this board seems obsessed with Merom MBP's, replacing a chip in a laptop really isn't that exciting.

I'm hoping for a completely new product range of some sort.

Who says Creative was going broke?

They have been around a long time and seem to be doing better than ever.

I'd hardly call a http://www.macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/8356/95% drop in profits "doing better than ever."

Despite MP3 players that offered more, Creative was on a downward spiral. Now they become a sheep following the iPod shepherd and Apple wins the battle.

    Slightly?

    Samsung is a huge Conglomerate.

In fact they built one of these.

I'm well aware of that, but many here have no idea that Samsung is much bigger than Apple.

Reading is so fundamental. It said "Quad-SLI-capable". Where in the article did it say it was in an SLI configuration?

Reading is really fundamental considering the fact that you can't even read two paragraphs worth of an article you posted:

"These two, combined with SLI, they will let you play something like Far Cry at a ludicrous 2160p resolution."

Yes, this sticky obtrusive and uninstallable piece of junk that constantly plagues people in the PC world (not to mention it radically slows your machine down. I recently installed Flash player on the PC side and without my permission McAffe was installed....ARGGGHH. Now they want to infect the Mac world....PLEASE NO!

Hurf. There was a checkbox for installing a trial version. You didn't uncheck it.

Maybe this is why you're using OSX then. It makes choices for you. Not yours, but you know...

The whole point of Thunderbolt is you can daisy-chain devices (up to 6 I think), so one port goes a long way.

Besides the three-monitor doohickery on the 27", I struggle to see why 95% of people would need two ports often. But still, nice to have :)

The current implementation of TB requires that the Display be the last device in the chain. Ars Technica forums have a rumour it shall change (in the next version)
