If I am forced to watch ANY commercials on the iTunes movie downloads, then I'll never use it, ever. Bad enough I spend $10 to go to a theater to have the same mazda zoom zoom zoom/coke and a smile crap every time.
Took the words right out of my mouth. I dont see Apple going this route, though I do understand that it can represent a substantial stream of revenue. I think that the Media store will simply act to fuel demand for a media device, much like the iTMS - iPod setup, from which Apple doesnt make a lot of money (Music Store)

the sandy bridget turbo boost will give good CPU performance upgrade from current MBA
but with lower GPU performance
mostly more battery life also, so it is due for refresh as well, MBA is currently selling well, so will receive a nice upgrade cycle compared to the old MBAs cycles (one year minimum)

Yes, but that doesn't matter. The word Windows is no generic IT word, while app(lication) is. That's the difference.
"Apple" can't be used to trademark a fruit, but it can be used to trademark a computer. "Windows" can't be used to trademark "windows of a house" but it can be for an operating system. "App store" can be trademarked for a brothel but not for a store that sells computer applications.
We all called those things "windows operating systems" or "windows-based operating systems" (and "graphical operating systems") in the IT industry back in the day when Microsoft got the trademark. You very heavily focus on the slang word "app" in the IT industry rather than the term "App Store" which is what the trademark application is for. Oddly, Microsoft did not trademark "Windows Operating System" they trademarked "Windows" which is more akin to your argument against the single word being generic. Back to the issue of PDA hardware options, does anyone have a clue whether it makes ANY sense to invest in Palm OS based PDA devices (like the Palm TX)? Is the Palm OS going to disappear? I'm holding out on a new PDA for fear that something directly from Apple will hit the market soon. I hate the thought of buying a Pocket PC device, and I would LOVE it if the next gen. video iPod had a boatload of PDA type features- which only makes sense given the rumored larger screen size.

I guess I've got mind whip lash from the transition to Intel. It's still kinda hard to wrap the mind around these speed improvments. I'm still used to the very modest speed bumps from the PPC days.
How wonderfully refreshing it is to see these leaps in speed with each product update. I hope this pace keeps up. Some may disagree, but I think it's spectacular compared to what we used to get from Moto/Freescale/IBM.

I was just watching the Bill Gates interview on 'The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch' on CNBC and when asked by Donny "What do you carry in your wallet and whats on your ipod?", he replied:

Yeah it is interesting but in the context of a desktop machine you are not getting a lot for the wait. A new front side bus and a Merom to go with it. AND 64 Bit support which can be very important for some.
I guess what I'[m saying is that if you are willing to wait for this upgrade then you really don't need a new computer even with this rather significant update to the iMac. Maybe that is where our paths diverge as I see this as a significant upgrade. Sure it is a stop gap measure for 64 bit support but it does offer significant performance advantages and should adapt well to Apples move to 64 bit.

It looks like we could see both a core race and a clock rate race again. As to AMD I'm not 100% on their quad either but I think it is a single chip implementation. Maybe a few moths slower in coming but the impression is a solid offering.
What I'm wondering is where the optimal number of cores is for the average desktop user. I know that dual has some pretty amazing results on the desktop so how far do we go for core wise. 4, 8, 12 or more? Especially on i86, it is to bad the PPC guys never got their acts together.

Three points:
1) Microsoft is primarily a software that is transitioning from a two trick pony into a diverse company addressing many areas - such diversification will take years to occur but to write Microsoft off at this stage is simply being stupid (as some have done on other forums out there on the internet).
2) Apple is stretched too thinly with the latest font fiasco being one of many fiascos; from the design defects in MacBook Pro's generation after generation to the design defect in the iPhone 4, the constant bugs appearing and made worse in each release and update of Mac OS X. Then there is the mountain of bugs in iOS with phones being dropped in terms of support asap and bugs once again not being fixed. Sooner or later people are going to catch onto the fact that Apple isn't dedicating the resources to their products and it'll come back to bite them in the ass. Apple is on a winning streak but remember that these winning streaks can't last forever.
3) Lion appears to be yet another example of a rushed job by Apple where once again a mountain of bugs are introduced, old bugs aren't being fixed promptly, promises but failure to deliver, new features but old hardware unsupported even though the actual hardware itself supports the said features (OpenGL 3.x support being one example of that). Again, sooner or later people are going to hook onto the fact that once again Apple ships yet another half baked operating system that'll require minimum 2-3 combo updates just to make it useful not only for end users but also for third party vendors to write their applications against.
Cheer all you want but there are genuine issues that need resolving by Apple but I don't see it happening any time soon. As for me, I am holding off till the end of this year to decide whether I stick with Mac's or whether I head over to the Windows world. If they can't even design a 17 MacBook Pro correctly then I don't hold out much hope that Lion isn't a complete clusterf-ck.
Edit: For WP7 haters, I suggest you actually use one before judging it. Microsoft is like Intel, a large company that takes a while for the ship to be turned around - anyone who remembers the P4 fiasco should remember how long it took for them to get back on track again. I just quit iTunes, and reopened it. I got a message about the new iPod update. So now everyone should be able to update their iPod without restoring it. :D
Update: I just noticed that when connected to the computer the iPod's display is now a dimmer backlight. I like that, not as bright. This is very good :) :D

I brought up using a phone internationally because of the technical compatibility of using GSM over CDMA. price is irrelevant. the fact that "some cdma phones are gsm compatible" is proof that CDMA has very limited use worldwide.
so basically. IF your CDMA carrier has a phone that you like AND is GSM compatible, you can take it and roam.
or. you can accept that while it may be technically superior (i said MAY. speed isnt everything) CDMA is a very tiny pocket of the mobile market.
The only reason why CDMA is basically only in the US is because it was still being developed while the EU jumped on GSM and endorsed it for every country. If your reason why CDMA is terrible is due to limited use, then, that's at best poor reasoning.

Thing is though... if the new top end MacBook Pro 2.3 can keep up with and beat even a current 8 core Mac Pro in some instances and trounce the quad core model, just how powerful is a top end Sandy Bridge iMac going to be :eek::confused:
And seeing as Apple blessed us with quad core in the laptops, I would bet my remainder of my hair on my head that the top end iMac option at most will have six core sandy bridge :D
